Camazotz
Camazotz, the death bat, rules the House of Bats in Xibalba. With a knife-like nose and massive wings, it decapitates those who cannot endure the underworld trial, as recounted in the Popol Vuh.
Story beats
- 1) Hero Twins enter Xibalba; one trial is the House of Bats, filled with lethal, chittering wings.
- 2) They hide in their blowguns, but Camazotz swoops and decapitates Hunahpu when he peeks.
- 3) The bat god delivers the head to underworld lords for the next ballgame.
- 4) Cleverness and resurrection let the Twins continue, proving endurance over fear.
Context & symbolism
Camazotz personifies sudden death and the terror of night creatures. Bats in Mesoamerica linked caves (portals) and bloodsucking to underworld power. The Hero Twins’ survival illustrates resilience and wit in the face of mortality.
Modern depictions blend bat iconography with obsidian blades, highlighting sacrificial themes and the thin veil between life and death.
