Hydra of Lerna
The Lernaean Hydra is a serpentine water beast with many heads; cut one off and two grow back. Heracles defeated it by cauterizing stumps and burying the immortal head, turning its venom into his own weapon.
Story beats
- 1) Hera breeds the Hydra in the swamps of Lerna to plague mortals.
- 2) Heracles confronts it as a labor; Iolaus aids with a burning brand.
- 3) Each severed head sprouts two; cauterization stops regeneration.
- 4) The immortal central head is buried under a heavy rock; Heracles dips arrows in its lethal bile.
Context & symbolism
The Hydra embodies compounding problems—every hasty cut makes matters worse until strategy and steady teamwork prevail. Poisonous breath and blood mark it as pollution from stagnant waters.
Heracles weaponizing the venom shows how confronting a threat can yield tools for future trials, though the poison later contributes to his doom.
