Susanoo and Yamata-no-Orochi
Exiled storm god Susanoo finds a family preparing to sacrifice their last daughter to the eight-headed serpent Orochi. With strong sake and a sly plan, he slays the beast and wins the Kusanagi sword.
Story beats
- 1) Banished from heaven, Susanoo meets an old couple who lost seven daughters to Orochi; only Kushinada remains.
- 2) Susanoo promises rescue in exchange for Kushinada’s hand. He transforms her into a comb to keep her safe.
- 3) He brews potent sake and sets eight vats behind eight fences.
- 4) Orochi drinks from each vat, becoming drunk and sluggish; Susanoo decapitates the heads and slices the tails.
- 5) In the tail he finds the sword Kusanagi, later gifted to Amaterasu and becoming imperial regalia.
Context & symbolism
Susanoo’s chaotic nature finds redemption through heroism. The plan uses craft and alcohol to neutralize overwhelming force. Kusanagi links the tale to imperial authority. Kushinada’s comb form shows protective transformation and marriage alliance.
Orochi embodies flood/chaos; sake renders it manageable, suggesting ritual offerings to tame nature. The story parallels dragon-slayer motifs worldwide.
